SBS Examines: Anti-gay slurs o panlalait, hindi dahil sa homophobia

Mula marahas na pag-atake sa gay men hanggang panlalait sa sports field, patuloy na isyu ang homophobia sa Australia. Bakit ito nagpapatuloy?


Si Dr. Erik Denison ay isang behavioural scientist sa Monash University na nagsaliksik kung bakit gumagamit ng mapanirang pananalita tungkol sa gay men sa mga lugar na maraming kalalakihan, mula sa mga sports club hanggang sa mga minahan.

Aniya, madalas gamitin ng mga lalaki ang homophobic slurs sa mga ganitong lugar para magpakitang-tao at ipakita ang kanilang pagiging heterosexual.

“What we found was it didn't matter if a young man or boy had very positive attitudes or had very negative attitudes, they're just as likely to use homophobic language," sabi niya.
They're driven by a desire by young men to conform to the behaviour of others and be accepted, and if they don't use this language, then they're viewed as weird and not part of the group.
Kahit na hindi intensyon na manakit, ayon kay Dr. Denison, ang ganitong uri ng pananalita ay maaaring magdulot ng seryosong pinsala sa LGBTQ youth.

Sa episode na ito ng Understanding Hate, tinalakay ang mga sanhi ng homophobic na pananalita at karahasan, pati na rin ang epekto nito sa gay men.
