1st of August: Happy Swiss National Day in Australia!

For more than 125 years, the 1st of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to the creation and alliance of the nation's first three cantons in 1291, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.

In Melbourne, the day is celebrated with Swiss flags flying at Federation Square, opposite Flinders Street Station. Later in the day, the Swiss Community will meet for a Lampion Parade, from Federation Square to the Swiss Club of Victoria.

The Parents and kids will walk along the Birrarung Marr, from 6pm. They will be accompanied by the Swiss honorary consul, Manuela Erb. The event will conclude with an Apero on the second floor of the 119-year-old club, in Flinders Lane.

Wherever you are in Australia: SBS German wishes you a happy Swiss National Day!

PS: Just for fun, test your inner Swiss to see if you can still remember the words to the Swiss national anthem, as interpreted by the Basler Madrigalisten and their vocalist, Fritz Näf.
