Gender-neutral language has been leading to heated debates in German-speaking countries for many years. Whether gender asterisks or the German Binnen-I — everyone has their particular preferences or dislikes. This includes the German federal ministries, which are now officially communicating that the special characters for gender-neutral language should not be used. But why should we do that in the first place ? And if so, are there also alternatives to gender asterisks?
