In the early morning of 7 October, hundreds of members of the militant Islamist Hamas crossed the border into Israel, killing and abducting civilians and soldiers. At the same time, Hamas launched a barrage of rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip. Israel declared a state of war and responded with a counter-offensive on the Gaza Strip. This also triggered a debate in Germany.
