Seniors in retirement homes and receiving home care often experience social isolation and feelings of loneliness, impacting their mental well-being. Recognising the vital role of social interactions, the Australian government has taken a proactive step by endorsing the 'Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS).' This initiative specifically caters to the needs of elderly individuals from diverse linguistic, cultural, and vulnerable backgrounds who face an increased risk of social isolation. The program facilitates volunteer visits aimed at offering companionship and fostering friendships for older adults. It's mutually beneficial, enriching the lives of both seniors and younger volunteers. 'Tabulam and Templer Homes for the Aged,' primarily serving the German-speaking community in Melbourne, actively participates in this scheme. They eagerly seek volunteers interested in forging new connections and friendships. SBS spoke with Lisa Karstens, the Client Liaison Officer, to learn more about the importance of this heartwarming initiative.
