Health experts recommend: get your flu vaccination

In 2025, Australia had a record number of deaths from influenza. According to health experts, low vaccination rates have contributed to this. And they are warning that this year could get even worse due to the spread of the influenza subclade K (Super-K).

Infektionsmediziner fordern die Bevölkerung dazu auf, sich gegen Grippe impfen zu lassen, um eine Wiederholung des Vorjahres zu verhindern. 2025 verzeichnete Australien eine Rekordanzahl an Todesfällen durch Influenza. Mehr als 1.700 Menschen starben. Es gab über eine halbe Million bestätigte Fälle.
Gesundheitsexperten zufolge haben die niedrigen Impfquoten zu den höheren Fallzahlen beigetragen. Ihre Warnung: Dieses Jahr könnte aufgrund der Ausbreitung der Influenza Subklade K oder Super K noch schlimmer werden. In Australien hat die Grippesaison aufgrund der sich schnell ausbreitenden Grippevariante Subklade K oder Super K Grippe ungewöhnlich früh begonnen. Im vergangenen Jahr gab es in Australien mehr als 500.000 Grippefälle. In diesem Jahr wurden bereits mehr als 24.000 Fälle verzeichnet, und dies lange vor dem Höhepunkt der Grippesaison. Der Direktor für Infektionskrankheiten am Marter Krankenhaus in Brisbane, Prof. Paul Griffin, empfiehlt, dass sich jeder gegen Grippe impfen lassen sollte. Die diesjährigen Grippeimpfstoffe bieten Schutz gegen Super-K , so Prof. Griffin.

We know one of the problems with subclad K or supa was. That it changed enough so that our vaccine perhaps didn't give ideal coverage last year. And as we do, every year we've updated that vaccine. We've included different types of flu that should give us the best protection to what we're expecting to see. So perhaps this year is more important than ever to get your FLU vaccine, because it has been updated accordingly.

The influenza-K subclade is genetically altered so that it spreads much more easily. It isn't more severe, but because you get so many more cases, you see more severe cases simply because of numbers.

It certainly is a significant part of what we've seen in recent times. I mean, last year's flu season was record breaking over five hundred thousand cases, over one thousand, seven hundred deaths, so they're very concerning figures, and part of that will be the emergence of subclad K or super K, but also a big part of that will be under vaccination. And while we can't control the FLU itself, what we can control is the magnitude of disease we see as a result by increasing vaccination as well as by trying to reduce transmission. People who are unwell should stay home for example, and those wh are vulnerable or really ill should also get tested and get antivirals. If we get that right, no matter what the season brings, we'll see a less severe impact from it.

I think what we're seeing now is it's not just access and logist to be well below where it should be, but the main advice I would give people is that we want people to ask questions. We want people to be informed, but make sure you get your information from good sources. We see a lot of people turn to AI or social media with information you're receiving isn't necessarily reputable. Our GPS and pharmacists do a great job of giving people advice.
Grippeimpfungen sind beim Hausarzt, teilnehmenden Apotheken und Gesundheitszentren der Gemeinden erhältlich. Manche Hausärzte rechnen die Impfung direkt über Medicare ohne zusätzliche Kosten ab. In Apotheken kostet sie um die 25 Dollar. Berechtigte Personen können im Rahmen des nationalen Impfprogramms der australischen Regierung eine kostenlose Grippeimpfung erhalten, darunter über 65-J ährige, Kinder bis fünf Jahre und Schwangere.
