If you look at your coffee in the morning and see a face, you experience a phenomenon known as pareidolia. It is usually a young man staring at you, because as Australian researchers have now discovered, we have gender-specific prejudices when we discover faces in everyday objects or in nature. Barbara Barkhausen took a closer look at this fascinating phenomenon and spoke to me on the phone.
