ScoMo: Why he always wears a lapel pin of the Australian flag

Scott Morrison with lapel pin of Australian flag

In late August, Prime Minister Scott Morrison addressed his first cabinet meeting in Canberra after its members were sworn in. In a bid to remind them "every single day whose side (they're) on", Mr Morrison gave each of his ministers a lapel pin of the Australian flag.

Mr Morrison's ministry has 41 ministers, 23 of whom are in cabinet. They were sworn in at Government House in Canberra on 28 August by the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

And this is what Mr Morrison said about his lapel pin:

"I've been wearing this now for many, many years. I can't remember when I first started doing this. The reason I wear it is because it reminds me every single day whose side I'm on. I'm on the side of the Australian people. That's what I'm saying to myself. That's who I think about first. Every single day."

What are your thoughts? Should Angela Merkel and her cabinet members in Germany follow the Australian lead?

Or would critics - in Germany and/or abroad - view it as blatant, even dangerous, nationalism?
