In the second episode of our Science Talks with Catharina Vendl, she interviews koala researcher Katrin Hohweiler about her work on population genetics of the popular Australian animals. On the east coast of Australia there is now only 20% of the population compared to 30 to 40 years ago. There are many reasons for this, but they all have to do with habitat loss. Why genetic diversity is also important for the conservation of the species and how it is researched is something the two scientists talk about in this program.
