Right in the heart of Byron Bay, Fletcher Street Cottage offers people without a permanent home a place to get support, have breakfast, take a shower, do their laundry or simply seek advice. But for the team, it is just as important to create a space where people feel seen, respected and welcome.
The cottage relies heavily on the local community — through donations, volunteers and businesses supporting the project. It cannot solve Byron Bay’s housing crisis, but it shows what can be achieved when a community steps up to support those most vulnerable.
And that support now has a more secure future. Byron Shire Council has granted Fletcher Street Cottage a 15-year licence to remain at its current location.
