Surprise outcome with local elections in Turkey - the background

In last weekend's local elections in Turkey, the opposition won a significant victory over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party. Not only were they able to hold on to important cities, but they also won over traditionally conservative areas. We discuss the background.
