Where does the Easter Bunny come from?

Every year on Easter Sunday, brightly painted eggs are hidden in gardens and apartments, only to be found by children in a much anticipated hunt. The main role in this widespread Easter tradition plays a magical bunny who, according to legend, is a true specialist in painting and hiding eggs. But where does the tradition of this hard-working rabbit actually come from?
