"Settlement for our indigenous people has a very different meaning" says Settlement Council CEO M. Dimopoulos

Maria Dimopoulos, CEO, Settlement Council of Australia spoke to SBS Greek about the experience of settlement in Australia, the settlement policies and the role of the Settlement Council in social integration and cohesion.


Maria Dimopoulos, AM, spoke to SBS in mid August while on a listening tour of Australia to identify the contributions of migrants and refugees and the gaps in policy.

She took up the role of CEO of the Settlement Council in May, having forged a highly successful carrier in the social justice space over three decades.

Her passion for women rights, gender equity, indigenous rights, the safety of women and children, migrant and refugee rights, diversity and inclusion have made her a household name.

She has represented Australia in international fora, more recently in the UN.

M. Dimopoulos migrated to Australia from Greece as a small child and studied law before she entered the social justice and human rights space.
