Melbourne community organisations will be holding events in support of First Nations people opposing the celebration of 26 January.

Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th of January as an official national day, but for many First Nations people it remains a day of pain and mourning.

Across the country various events will be taking place to protest the commemoration of a date which marked the beginning of Indigenous dispossession.

Hellenic Women's Federation of Victoria, the Darebin Ethnic Communities Council and Democritus Workers' League will be joining these voices holding events on Saturday, 25 January.

A Democritus Workers' League spokeswoman spoke to SBS Greek's Sotiris Hatzimanolis about the initiative.
