Yiddish Report with Alex Dafner, 9.8.2020The Melbourne Jewish Community, like many other, felt the impact of rising Covid-19 infections, when 11 residents in two of Jewish Care Victoria elders’ homes, tested positive for the virus, forcing the implementation of the strictest infection care and prevention methods and procedures. Jewish schools in Melbourne, like others, returned to home-distance learning to the great disappointment of year 12 students in particular, with all principals expressing their school’s greater preparedness for such learning and their desire to keep students, staff, parents and the community as safe as possible from infection with the coronavirus. Jewish community leaders bid farewell to the Israeli Ambassador in Australia, Mark Sofer and his wife Sarah, who are returning to Israel following the completion of their 3 year term here, a time marked by a great strengthening of relations and agreements between the two nations, but also much disruption, caused by three elections in Israel, the Australian bushfires, the Malka Leifer case and now the Covid-19 pandemic.
