Despite the warnings and pleas by Australian Jewish doctors, community and religious leaders regarding the precautions and care that must be taken to combat the Corona Virus pandemic, a group of breakaway former Addass-Israel ultra-Orthodox men in Melbourne kept on meeting for prayers in a small synagogue and claimed having a special exemption from the PM’s office, a claim that was later denied by that office. Leading Australian Jewish bodies, the ECAJ, ZFA and AIJAC submitted a joint letter to the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, over the strong likelihood of the inclusion of Yaakov Litzman in the new Israeli Unity Government, because of his alleged interference in the Malka Leifer extradition case, when he was Minister for Health in the previous Netanyahu government. The NSW JCA and Jewish Care organizations have launched a $1 million appeal to fund help for vulnerable members of the Jewish community of NSW who may fall through the cracks despite the Australian Government’s generous assistance packages to those effected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
