Professor Hyam Rubinstein FAA is a distinguished Australian mathematician. We chat about the joy of doing mathematics, and we focus on one concrete application to improve mining operation that Hyam and a graduate student have been working on.

Professor Hyam Rubinstein has been interested in doing mathematics from age 6! In this fascinating interview Professor Rubinstein talks about the beauty of mathematics, gives some tips to students who find maths a bit daunting, and explains in detail how he and a PhD student, mining engineer Dr Juan Yarmuch, applied seemingly abstract mathematics to a very concrete mining challenge. How to effectively  design mining operations as to minimise waste. Researched by Isaac Nativ.
