Netta Yashchin and her 'Sabra' show - a tale of migration and belonging

She calls herself Geographically promiscuous, having migrated as a child from Lithuania to Israel, then moving back and forth between Israel and Australia a couple of times. A trained Actor and a NIDA trained Director she sees herself as an all rounded stage-artist. Her one woman show - 'Sabra' has been performed in festivals and on stages in major cities and will be staged again at the end of this month. SBS caught up with Netta for a deep dive on identity, belonging, humour and art.


Netta Yashchin is an Israeli-Australian actress, director and theatre-maker, who was actually born in Lithuania and immigrated first to Israel when eight years old, and then after meeting here Greek-Australian husband, immigrated here. She then went back to live in Israel for seven years, and came back again to Australia.

Her career spans stage, film and international festivals. Trained at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, she has worked extensively in theatre both as a stage performer and a director, Her artistic work blends personal storytelling with broader social themes. Through acting and directing roles in theatre an other projects, Netta reflects on the experience of migration and generational identity, using humour and emotional honesty to connect individual stories with wider audiences.

Her latest one-woman show, Sabra, combines storytelling, performance and humour to explore Israeli identity, migration, and the challenges of growing up between cultures. The production has been presented to Australian audiences through major festival platforms and has been received as an intimate, character-driven exploration of identity and resilience
