Alex Dafner Yiddish report 16.8.2020 The Melbourne Jewish Care Victoria’s Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Home for the elderly suffered the impact of rising Covid-19 infections in the state this week, with one resident dying and 27 others as well as 20 staff infected with the virus. A Melbourne Holocaust survivor, Marianne Schwarz, who was born in Vienna and survived the Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen Nazi concentration camps, became Victoria’s oldest COVID-19 survivor, as she marked her 98th birthday at the Cabrini Malvern Hospital on Saturday, where she had spent three weeks being treated for COVID-19. Eleven leading, Australian Jewish Organisations joined 113 others around the world in a petition urging Facebook to adopt the International Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism, to try to curb the rise of hate and antisemitic posts on its social media platforms. Nineteen Australian Jewish Organisations have come together to support a statement demanding the Australian government change its policy of offshore processing of the unauthorised boat arrivals of asylum seekers to Australia.
