SBS Yiddish with Alex Dafner: Tasmania is to ban Nazi swastika, following Victoria, NSW and QLD

SBS YIDDISH SEGMENT: 12.06.2022

PREPARED, PRODUCED AND PRESENTED BY ALEX DAFNER

Tasmania is the latest state to announce its intention to ban the public displays of the Nazi swastika, following similar actions by the State Governments in Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Former Jewish students at Melbourne’s Brighton Secondary College have told the Federal Court of Australia, in their action against the school and the Victorian Education Department that serious antisemitic bullying, swastika graffiti and violent threats, were part of Jewish students’ daily lives at the school, and teachers and the principal did not intervene.

The ECAJ, JCCV and the Anti-Defamation Commission have appealed to antique businesses not to sell Nazi era objects, following one such auction in Melbourne and have appealed to the Victorian State Government to act to criminalize the sale of Nazi memorabilia.
