How Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy went from an actor playing president on TV to defiant wartime leader

The Servant of the People, was a satirical TV show about a down-on-his-luck high-school teacher, played by Mr Zelenskyy, who was thrust into the Ukrainian presidency after his rant about corruption went viral.

In April 2019, within a month of the show's finale, the comedian-turned politician was elected Ukraine's president.

Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena, an architect, have a 17-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son. He said this week that they remained in Ukraine, not joining the exodus of mainly women and children refugees seeking safety abroad.

patriotism
