Karwa Chauth will be celebrated by married women this year on 8th October 2017 when they will fast till moon rise.

Several married Indian women observe a nirjala, or fast, to pray for the long lives of their husbands.

Traditionally, women wake up at sunrise to eat sargi which mostly consists of dry fruits and coconut.

After this meal, they spend the entire day without food or water until they see the moon.

During the day, women get together dressed in red clothes often associated with being married and apply henna to their hands and sing songs.

They also offer prayers to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Kartik and pray for their husband’s long life.

They break their fast, when the moon has been spotted.

To break the fast, women look at the moon and their husbands through a sieve, and the men then offer their wives water, thus breaking their fast.

SBS Hindi wishes all a very happy and a joyful Karwa Chauth.
