The small Jain community in Melbourne is thrilled with the announcement.

“More than the money, it is the thought that counts,” says Nitin Doshi, the president of the Shwetabar Jain Singh.

Members gathered on Monday noon at their Moorabbin centre where the Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott announced the funding will come through the Victorian Government’s Multicultural Community Infrastructure Fund (MCIF).
Minister Scott said, “This funding will strengthen the Indian community participation in our vibrant multicultural society and have an enduring impact on the character and infrastructure of our State.”

Mr Doshi told SBS Hindi the community plans to utilise the funds to refurbish their existing facility in Melbourne's south-east.

“We bought an existing space in May this year. We want to refurbish it and build a commercial kitchen as well as provide heating and cooling facilities so that whole community can start utilising the campus,” Mr Doshi says.

The committee’s future plans involve building a Jain Temple on the site in next two years.

“We have got the design and plan ready to build and are now raising funds to build this centre. We hope to achieve this in another two years,” he said.

Mr Doshi said the community centre is a hub for the small Jain community in Melbourne.

“When the community learnt that the government is extending their financial support for our centre, everyone was very happy. It is an occasion for us to celebrate,” he says.

“We are very thrilled.”
