Earthquake jolts Indian capital amid coronavirus lockdown

Mild earthquake tremors were felt in the Indian capital and adjoining region (Delhi-NCR region) on Sunday evening.

According to India’s National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred in National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi with a focal depth of 8 km near Sonia Vihar at 5.45 pm.

The tremors were felt for several seconds in Delhi and its neighbouring cities such as Noida, Ghaziabad forcing many to rush out amid coronavirus lockdown.

India has imposed a strict lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus with people allowed to step out only to get essentials or medical care.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted "Tremors felt in Delhi. Hope everyone is safe. I pray for the safety of each one of you."
