The incident occurred last Sunday when Parush Kainth, in his 30s, had reportedly gone snorkelling. Police were notified around 3.40 pm to an incident at Goat Island marine reserve, approximately an hour and a half north of Auckland.
According to the Indian High Commission in Wellington, “He was rushed to hospital but he passed away on Monday the 4th.”
“He had apparently gone snorkelling at this popular tourist destination. All efforts were made to resuscitate him. CPR was administered and was taken to Auckland City Hospital by air ambulance. All efforts to revive him failed and he passed away the next day,” the Indian High Commission told SBS Hindi in an email.
Mr Kainth, a chef by profession, was originally from Delhi and had been living in New Zealand for the past four years. He was currently on a work visa and was working as a chef in a restaurant.
The High Commission says it is in touch with his family in India, as well as with his employer and friends in New Zealand, and is making all necessary efforts for repatriation of his body to India as per the wishes of the family.
Many Indians have lost their lives this summer in New Zealand.
Twenty-year-old Amana Kumar, an aviation student from New Delhi drowned at the popular Maraetotara Falls in Hawke’s Bay in December. Indian national Upmanyu Sharma died after an incident at Hunua Falls, South of Auckland in New Zealand on January 20th.
