Talented India opener Prithvi Shaw has been suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for testing positive for a banned substance.
BCCI which runs its own anti-doping set-up that does not come under India’s National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) or World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has imposed a backdated eight-month suspension on the 19-year-old cricketer who consumed an over-the-counter cough medicine that contained a banned substance.
"Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances,” the BCCI release stated.
“Prithvi Shaw registered with Mumbai Cricket Association, has been suspended for a doping violation,” the BCCI stated.
Shaw’s ban has been imposed retrospectively from mid-March to mid-November 2019.

“I have come to know today that I will not be able to play cricket till mid-November 2019. This is in light of a prohibited substance present in the cough syrup which I inadvertently took when I had severe cough & cold while playing for my Mumbai team during Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament in Indore in Feb 2019,” the young cricketer tweeted on Wednesday.
“I accept my fate with all sincerity. While I am still nursing an injury which I suffered during my last tournament, this news has really shaken me,” he said.
The young cricketer is the second-youngest Indian after legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to make a Test century and the youngest Indian to do so on Test debut.
As the former captain of India national under-19 cricket team, Shaw led the team to beat Australia by eight wickets to win their fourth Under-19 World Cup in 2018.
He also plays for the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.
