  • Narendra Modi has over 53 million followers on Twitter, over 44 million on Facebook and over 35 million on Instagram
  • He also communicates through his monthly radio talk, ‘Mann Ki Baat’

Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister who boasts millions of followers on social media is thinking of giving up his social media accounts, he announced, ironically on social media on Monday.

Mr Modi enjoys a strong following on social media and the announcement came as a surprise to many of his followers, including his own party members and those across the political lines.

While one person speculated it was a precursor to him moving to another indigenous social media platform, many prodded him not to leave the social media world, with #nosir taking up the number one spot on trends on Twitter in India.

But many who don't agree with his politics welcomed the announcement.

Mr Modi has used his social media accounts over the years to directly communicate with people, especially during election season.

Mr Modi’s virtual presence also includes a website and an app called NaMo.
