An Indian-origin CEO of a US-based company was arrested at the Mumbai International Airport on Sunday and charged with making an airport bomb threat, NDTV reports.

45-year-old Vinay Moorjani was on his way from Mumbai to Virginia, US via Delhi and Rome with his wife and kids when he was arrested for allegedly making a hoax bomb call.

Police allege that Mr Moorjani was frustrated with flight delays and used a phone booth in the airport to call its toll-free number, warning the operator “bomb fata hai” – a bomb has exploded. He then immediately hung up.

Investigators claim he made the threat in order to delay all outbound flights from Delhi so he would not miss a connecting flight to Rome, NDTV reports.

Mr Moorjani says he asked the operator about his Bombay-to-Delhi flight which was misheard as ‘Bomb Hai’. He said he hung up the phone due to disturbance in the line.

Mr Moorjani was produced in the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday charged with criminal intimidation and other offences.

He was granted bail by court.
