An 18-month-old girl was allegedly raped by her 33-year-old neighbour in New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
According to the police, the families of the victim and the accused were known to each other.
The child had gone to play with the accused's kids when this alleged crime occured.
While his wife was on the terrace for some work, the accused allegedly raped the girl in presence of his two children inside his one-room accommodation, a senior police official said.
Crying incessantly, the toddler returned home to her mother and grandmother when the mother saw her bleeding.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital and the doctors referred her to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
The police was called in after the doctors confirmed the child was raped.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) M.N. Tiwari said a case had been registered and further investigation was under way.
“A case under Section 6 of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been registered and the girl is being counselled,” Mr. Tiwari was quoted saying by The Hindu.
Delhi Commission For Women chief Swati Maliwal tweeted that she was going to meet the victim at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where she is admitted.
On Sunday, a 100-year-old woman died after she was raped in a village in Uttar Pradesh state's Meerut district.
