Sofina Nikat who smothered daughter to death spared jail

Sofina Nikat, a mother who smothered her 15-month-old baby will be released from custody. She has been sentenced to a 12-month community correction.

Sofina Nikat, a mother who smothered her 15-month-old baby will be released from custody.

She has been sentenced to a 12-month community correction.

24-years-old Nikat had pleaded guilty to infanticide.

She admitted to suffocating her daughter before throwing her body into a creek in Melbourne.

The incident took place in April 2016. She was suffering from post-natal depression when she smothered her daughter Sanaya Sahib in a park in Heidelberg West.

She had separated from her husband before this incident.

Fijian-born Nikat pleaded guilty in September.

Justice Lex Lasry told the Victorian Supreme Court that Nikat's chances of rehabilitation were good.

She had already spent 529 days in prison.

The court has sentenced her to a 12-month community correction order.
