Spread over two days, Melbourne is set to host a special workshop and a public lecture to explore all aspects of Hindi in Australia.

On 24th October, La Trobe Asia and Australia India Institute will be hosting a workshop on Hindi in Melbourne.

The event is being held at La Trobe University.

This day-long workshop aims to explore all aspects of Hindi in Australia.

Topics to be covered include all levels of Hindi education, media and publishing as well as Hindi as a link between India and Australia. The workshop includes keynote speakers from Australia’s Hindi community, as well as guests from India, including Mrinal Pande, Aditi Maheshwari and Varun Grover.

La Trobe's Lecturer of Hindi, Dr Ian Woolford told SBS Hindi, "As a university lecturer of Hindi language in Melbourne, it is becoming increasingly apparent to me that the story of Hindi is part of Australia's story.

"In 2017, it is time to celebrate the status of of not just Hindi, but all India's languages, as part of australia's multicultural identity. So this is the perfect time to hold a workshop on the topic of Hindi in Australia."

The Hindi workshop is part of a week-long event hosted by The Australia-India Institute and La Trobe University.

"We are organising the day around the topics of "community", "creativity", "futures", and "performance". The workshop brings together Hindi specialists from around Australia, as well as key guests from India: publisher Aditi Maheshwari, writer and journalist Mrinal Pande, and lyricist and screenwriter Varun Grover. This will give a chance for Indian guests to learn about Australia's vibrant Hindi community. My Hindi students at La Trobe are especially excited to meet Varun Grover, because they have watched his film Masaan and read his heart-touching story Karejava," Dr Wollford said.

A day after, a public lecture on Hindi in Australia, The story so far, will see eminent personalities from India and Australia working with Hindi discuss the language from perspectives of media, literature, and education.

Scheduled in the evening at The University of Melbourne campus, the panel features Dr Ian Woolford, Hindi lecturer at La Trobe University, Ms Mrinal Pande, an Indian television personality, journalist and author, Ms Aditi Maheshwari-Goyal, the Director of the Copyrights and Translation Department at Vani Prakashan and SBS Hindi’s Executive Producer, Ms Kumud Merani.
