The New Generation Rolling-stock (NGR) trains are first being deployed to the Gold Coast and Airport lines to meet higher patronage demand and provide improved customer service during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The NGR trains are planned to operate across the entire South East Queensland passenger rail network, Queensland Trains said in a statement.
The trains are being designed by the Bombardier-led consortium called Qtetic. The trains were designed in Queensland and assembled in Savli, India.

“Once assembled, each NGR train travels via cargo vessel from the Port of Mumbai to the Port of Brisbane, where it is unloaded and hauled to the NGR Maintenance Centre at Wulkuraka (west of Ipswich) to undergo further testing before entering the South East Queensland passenger network for service,” a spokesperson for QueenslandRail told SBS Hindi.
The first NGR train arrived at the Port of Brisbane on 15 February 2016. There are currently 21 NGR trains in Queensland – three are in passenger service and eight are undergoing final on-track testing.

Each six-car NGR train will have a total passenger capacity of approximately 964 people, including 454 seated and 510 standing (depending on conditions). The trains are about 147 m long and weigh about 260 tonnes.
The trains have 53 internal and external CCTV cameras with motion sensors. Each car has six LCD infotainment screens. There are on-board toilets with baby change table, overhead ‘dropper’ handles and seat handles for standing passengers and Wi-Fi in all six cars.
