Australia Day, 2022 honours include Dylan Alcott, a Paralympian and philanthropist who has been named ‘Australian of the Year’ for achievements in both his sport and his disability awareness work. St John Ambulance Volunteer Valmai Dempsey received the ‘Senior Australian of the Year’ for her efforts in responding to the Black Summer bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic. Shanna Whan, CEO of Sober in the Country, an organisation that helps with alcoholism in rural Australia was named ‘Australia's Local Hero’, and Dr Daniel Nour, who founded a network of homeless medical services was recognised with the ‘Young Australian of the Year’ for his selfless work.
