What starts as a mock courtroom quickly turns into a disturbing reflection of society. Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai, the Hindi adaptation of Vijay Tendulkar’s acclaimed Marathi play Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, explores the social forces that can threaten to engulf us. Brisbane-based director Ashish Kumar Sharma speaks about the play and why its themes remain relevant today.
Speaking with SBS Hindi, he said that he is passionate about initiating a meaningful cultural conversation and introducing Brisbane audiences to these landmark works of Indian literature and performance that resonate in contemporary society.
Sharma added, "The subject remains relevant in present-day society; the protagonist is a representative of voiceless women who have been silenced and crushed by the patriarchal system."
Ashish Kumar Sharma is a theatre director and scenographer from India, currently pursuing his PhD at Griffith University in Brisbane.
Written by noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar in the 60s, 'Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai' ( the original Marathi play ''Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe') is considered one of India's most influential modern dramas. It has been translated into several Indian languages. It is a drama-within-the-drama. Through a fictional mock trial, the imaginary world becomes a reality, and the societal hypocrisy is unmasked.
'Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai' will be staged in Brisbane from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August.
