Before 1770 is a documentary that uncovers an ancient bond between Makassan Muslims and the Aboriginal peoples of Australia.

The documentary “Before 1770” uncovers the long-established trade and social ties between Makassar sailors and Aboriginal peoples in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory - long before the Europeans set foot in Australia.


After 5 years of production, Abu Hanfia Institute presented a documentary film “Before 1770”.

Directed by Wesam Charkawi, “Before 1770” is a documentary about the relationship between Makassar's Muslim sailors and Aboriginal peoples hundreds of years ago.

In a conversation with SBS Indonesian, Australian-born director Wesam Charkawi from a Lebanese background, recounts the long process of making the film and the importance of straightening Australia's historical narrative.
