The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's annual “Mapping Social Cohesion Report” reveals that economic pressures and disparities are the most significant issues affecting Australian society today.

The 2023 survey gathered the views of 7,500 respondents with more than 90 questions asked on topics including immigration, multiculturalism, key issues facing Australia, government and community life.

Surveys in 2020 showed a strong improvement in various indicators of social cohesion during the COVID 19 pandemic, but current data show that those indicators are diminishing.

52% of people in 2020 reported that they felt very possessive in Australia, but that figure has declined to a record low of 48% by 2023.

The proportion of the public who are extremely proud of the Australian way of life and culture has declined to 37%.

84% of people believe that the gap between those on high and low incomes is now too large.
