Victoria's Chinese-Indonesian community rang in the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Year of the Fire Horse, at the WISE Annual Gala held at a restaurant in Springvale, Melbourne.
The annual event drew the Chinese-Indonesian diaspora from across generations and featured a lively programme of entertainment, including a lion dance, silat, and instrumental music.
Andra, who has called Australia home for more than 20 years, shared how she actually found Lunar New Year celebrations more vibrant after moving to Australia, and why she believes it matters for younger generations to stay connected to their Chinese-Indonesian cultural roots as part of who they are.

The event also attracted younger members of the community, including Brian, a Gen Z undergraduate student at Monash University originally from Jakarta, who was celebrating Lunar New Year away from his family.
How does Victoria's Chinese-Indonesian diaspora find meaning in celebrating the Lunar New Year far from home? Hear SBS Indonesian's conversations with WISE founder Suhana Lim, and attendees Andra and Brian, in the full podcast.
