Nicholas F. Goselin, an American pilot, was the victim of an attack by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) at Ipdeheik Airport in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, on Thursday, July 2. Indonesian police have named seven suspects and are currently pursuing them.
The attack carried out by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) at Ipdeheik Airport in Yahukimo Regency, Highland Papua, on July 2 has not only impacted the pilot and aviation community but also raised concerns about potential disruptions to flight services in remote areas of Papua that rely heavily on this mode of transportation.
Theo Hesegem is the Executive Director of the Papua Foundation for Justice and Human Integrity (Yayasan Keadilan dan Keutuhan Manusia Papua (YKKMP), based in Wamena—one of the cities closest to the Yahukimo region. He is well-versed in the on-the-ground conditions within this highly remote area of the Papua Highlands.
Following the fatal shooting, Theo reported receiving a statement from Sebby Sembom, the spokesperson for the TPKPB, confirming that the group was indeed responsible for the attack. However, they claimed the action was taken because they had previously issued a warning that, as a conflict zone, Yahukimo should not be accessed by flights.
Theo expressed regret over the statement, noting that as a civilian, the pilot is entitled to protection from both warring parties — whether the TNI/Polri or the TPNPB.
The violence in Yahukimo has escalated sharply, and it is the civilians who are bearing the brunt of it.Theo Hesegem, Executive Director of Yayasan Keadilan dan Keutuhan Manusia Papua (YKKMP)
The shooting of the pilot will have long-lasting repercussions for the community. Theo explained that small aircrafts — like the one flown by the American pilot — provide services to remote areas. "The vision here is a humanitarian one, which includes serving teachers and health workers, as well as — more broadly — the communities living in conflict zones," Theo emphasised.
The shooting will affect the psychological state of other pilots. There are concerns that all transport services in the conflict-ridden areas of Papua will be disrupted.
