Indonesian student has developed an interactive online map that accurately measures soil moisture levels at very high resolution, almost in real time.

Marliana Tri Widyastuti spent approximately a year developing AI-based soil mapping technology that can be used to measure soil moisture.

Under the guidance of Professor Budiman Minasny at the Sydney Institute of Agriculture of the University of Sydney, Ms Widyastuti used a “deep learning model” to combine soil moisture data from Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment with other data such as weather and topography.

These researchers said that the modelling is the first to operate in the world, of which has a more tangible reach compared to those of scientific papers.
Prof Minasny said that the interactive online map is well received by Tasmanian farmers who could directly and easily access the data, which could be useful in deciding their agricultural irrigation.

Ms Widyastuti said she hopes to develop this research further in her current Doctoral studies.
