What is the profile of the Indonesian diaspora living in Darwin, Northern Territory, and what specific challenges does this community face?

Through communication, understanding can be built, misunderstandings avoided, and relationships improved.
Bagus Hendraning Kobarsih, Indonesian Consul for Northern Territory

Although the Indonesian diaspora in Darwin is smaller in number than other communities — such as the Indian or Filipino communities — it holds great potential for unity and mutual support, according to the Indonesian Consul for the Northern Territory, Bagus Hendraning Kobarsih. This is clearly evident when natural disasters strike Indonesia, as the community swiftly mobilises to gather aid for their fellow citizens back home.

Mr Kobarsih emphasised the importance of maintaining moral ties with the homeland, particularly amidst the rising global mobility of people.

In the Northern Territory, community gatherings — such as weddings, religious study sessions and other celebrations — serve as vital occasions for fostering connections and solidarity among members of the Indonesian diaspora.
