Melbourne man charged over making Remote Access Trojan spyware

A 24-year-old Melbourne man at the centre of global law enforcement operations has been charged by the Australian Federal Police. He was just 15 when he allegedly created the spyware Remote Access Trojan, which is sold worldwide and used by domestic violence offenders and other criminals.


Following information from multinational cybersecurity companies and F-B-I five years ago, a global police investigation began.

That investigation began to dismantle the web behind Trojan Remote Access spyware, also known as RAT, called Imminent Monitor.

In2019, AFP's Operation Cepheus successfully shut down the software, preventing its use and further purchases.

In the same year, investigators seized a number of devices, including a purpose-built computer containing code consistent with the development and use of spyware,
