Melbourne Fringe Festival returns in 2025. One of the events under its banner highlights the richness of Indonesian music and art, woven with musical styles from other parts of the world. The event, to be held on October 18 2025 at Bar 303, Northcote, is titled ‘Nusa di Bawah Angin’ (The Southern Landmass Beneath the Winds).
One of the groups set to perform at Nusa di Bawah Angin is Sahul Sakti, a musical ensemble whose style is a mix of genres and cultures, including jazz, classical, traditional musics of the Malay Peninsula and Brazil. Occasionally, these are combined with movements, particularly ones that are martial-arts related.
They are slated to share the stage with the Jawa Pitu group - Melbourne’s own dangdut-funk outfit - and Indonesian dance group Sanggar Lestari.
Sahul Sakti’s Huich Goh and Mick Honneger told SBS Indonesian that the country had been occupying a special place in their hearts for many years, in Nusa diBawah Angin Sahul Sakti was planning to deliver a show thick with Indonesian influences.
