Playing golf in Australia’s cold weather requires special preparation and strategy, but this challenge actually makes golfers even more enthusiastic.
For some people, winter might be a reason to stay indoor and cut back on outdoor activities. However, that’s not the case for Rangga Endika, a golfer who is active in a community called VIGA.

VIGA is an Indonesian golf community in Melbourne that has been in existence for more than 30 years. With over 50 members, VIGA regularly holds weekly golf games as both a sporting event and an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of friendship among its members.

In addition to physical condition, golfers must also be more patient in reading course conditions. Grass that is wet from dew and sometimes even covered with a thin layer of frost changes the way the ball bounces and rolls. Morning fog can also reduce visibility, so players must be more careful when determining their target. “Strong winds actually make it harder to direct the ball than rain, because the ball’s direction becomes even harder to control,” said Rangga.
Preparing the right gear is also a crucial step before heading out onto the course. Golfers typically wear a comfortable jacket that isn’t too thick so they can swing freely. Rangga also recommends bringing hand warmers to keep hands warm, a spare pair of gloves, as well as a raincoat and umbrella in case the weather changes at any moment.

Playing strategies also adapt to winter conditions. Players don’t just rely on their ability to hit the ball; they also pay closer attention to wind direction, soil moisture, and surface conditions. Patience is one of the key factors in ensuring that every decision on the course results in a more effective shot.
