Fifteen years ago, Wilfred Liauw arrived in Australia to participate in the Language Assistant Program. With no plans to settle, how did he come across an opportunity that changed his life?
With a background in English education from a university in Jakarta, Wilfred Liauw participated in the Australian government's Language Assistant Program and arrived in Perth in 2011.
Through this program, Liauw said he gained an idea of what it would be like to teach in Australia.
When he was offered a job as an Indonesian language teacher at a school in Perth, Liauw admitted he never imagined he would live and work in this country.
"So, I initially only thought about spending a year enjoying life in Australia, learning a lot from the Australian teachers and the education system, and then I intended to return to Indonesia," he said.

As an Indonesian native speaker, Liauw sees both challenges and advantages in teaching English to Australian students. He also experiences the differences between teaching in Australia and Indonesia.
