Federal Police will be given powers to penetrate domestic computer networks for the first time - moving to better defend the nation's critical infrastructure from increasing attacks.

Over the past few months there's been an increase in cyber attacks. Nine Australian breweries were taken offline in June. The Port Kembla steelworks furnace, in New South Wales, was shut down in May. And there were two ransomware attacks on logistics giant Toll in March and April.
