Last month UNESCO issued an assessment that the Great Barrier Reef should be placed on a list of endangered world heritage sites. However, on 23 July, following lobbying by the Australian government, the World Heritage Committee over-looked Unesco’s assessment. So what does a marine biologist think?
Dr Dewi Syahidah is an alumni of James Cook University who presently works as a researcher at the Institute for Marine Research and Aquaculture in Indonesia. After the Unesco decision in June she explained to Sri Dean her assessment of condition of the reef. She also explained the reasons for the Australian Government’s attitude.
