The documentary film 'They Call Me Babu' tells a story that has never been openly told before, about how life of a "babu" in Indonesia in the Dutch era.


'They Call Me Babu' is the only film with an Indonesian background screened at the Sydney Film Festival 2020 - which was also packaged differently amid the pandemic.

The film follows the story of Alima, a nanny - or "babu" - who works for a Dutch family with a World War II background and when Indonesia strives fighting for independence.

Denise Aznam, a Dutch Indonesian-born artist based in Amsterdam, is the voice of Alima.

SBS Indonesian spoke to Denise about her role in the Sandra Beerends' project, including how she sees Alima character and the reaction of the Dutch to see the role of the "babu" in the colonial era.
