Russia announced it was leaving the International Space Station - its decision reveals the extent of its divisions with the West over Ukraine.

To date space exploration is one of the few areas where cooperation between Russia, the United States and their allies has not been undermined by tensions in Ukraine.

The International Space Station [ISS] has long been a symbol of post-Cold War international teamwork. Russia and the United States have worked side by side on the space station since it went into orbit in 1998.

This arrangement has suffered a lot of tension over the years. But, it looks like this cooperation will come to a halt after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and several rounds of crushing Western sanctions against Russia.

The newly appointed head of Russia's space agency has announced that the country will exit the station after 2024, and focus on building its own outpost.
