More than 2500 people have been treated for bluebottle stings on the Gold and Sunshine coasts in Queensland as the jellyfish swarm beaches in record numbers.
Across the weekend, more than 2630 people have been stung with several suffering anaphylactic shock and treated by paramedics.
Almost 1000 people were hurt in a matter of hours on Sunday afternoon, with 476 bluebottle stings treated on the Gold Coast and 461 on the Sunshine Coast.
Several swimmers suffered anaphylactic shock and were attended to by paramedics.
Surf Life Saving duty officer Jeremy Sturges has told Channel Nine he has never seen anything like it.
"We've had a northeasterly swell blowing since Boxing Day, which has brought on the swell that will bring in the bluebottles, if you like. So it is tidal as well. With the high tide the bluebottles will be pushed in, with an outgoing tide they will be pulled out as well."
