Students at state schools in Victoria will be banned from using their mobile phones during school hours from next year in a bid to cut cyber-bullying.

Students will have to switch off their phones and store them in lockers until the final bell.

Education Minister James Merlino has told the ABC  it will remove a major distraction from classrooms and create a positive, supportive environment for students.

"This will be a policy that will apply across every government school across Victoria. So the policy is very clear. Teachers won't have to constantly say to students put your phone away in the classroom. Phones will be in lockers from first bell to last bell," said Merlino.
